AUSTIN, Texas - Texas jumped on Maryland early with a six-run first inning and Hoby Milner gave up just two hits in seven innings as the sixth-ranked Longhorns beat the Terrapins 16-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Milner, a sophomore left-hander, struck out 10 and issued just one walk in the game. Terrapin pitchers struggled throughout, issuing 11 walks and hitting four batters with pitches.

Texas (3-1) put the pressure on Maryland's (1-3) defense early, which had committed just one error coming into the game. The Longhorns put down three straight bunts - two of which went for hits - while Maryland pitcher Brady Kirkpatrick committed a throwing error on the other.

With the bases loaded and Erich Weiss at the plate, a passed ball allowed Paul Montalbano to score, giving Texas a 1-0 lead. Weiss later walked to load the bases, Jonathan Walsh drew another walk and Kirkpatrick hit Tant Shepherd with a pitch to make it 3-0.

After Blair Delean replaced Kirkpatrick on the mound, Cohl Walla doubled down the left-field line, clearing the bases and giving the Longhorns a 6-0 lead. Delean retired three straight after that, but the six-run lead gave Milner all the support he needed.

The Longhorns added another three runs in the second and scored at least one run in all but two innings.

Montalbano and Mark Payton had three-hit days for Texas, while Weiss, a freshman was 2-for-3 with three RBI. He finished the four-game series 9-for-11 at the plate.

Matt Marquis, Brandon Padula and Tomo Delp had the lone hits for Maryland. Gary Schneider and Michael Murphy each pitched scoreless innings.

Milner (1-0) earned the win for Texas. Kirkpatrick (0-1) was charged with six runs, five of which were earned, and took the loss.

Maryland plays its home opener against Navy on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
