Maryland Advances to the ECAC Finals

Feb. 26, 2011

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland opened the ECAC Championship Saturday with two victories. An 11-8 win over No. 4 seed Marist in the opening round of the eight-team tournament moved the fifth-seeded Terps into the semis where they downed No. 1 seed Princeton, 11-10.

Maryland senior Ally Beck continued her strong play from last weekend's Maryland Invitational and matched a career high with four goals in the victory over Marist. Junior Shelby Reyes also contributed nine saves.

"We did a nice job defensively, especially against their front court offense," Maryland head coach Carl Salyer said.

Christine Goetsch and Simone Lewis scored two goals each for the Terps (4-4), while Rosie Pauli, Agnes Konopka, and Kelly Kline combined for six goals for Marist (4-6).

Maryland's second game of the day proved to be a back-and-forth match against Princeton (4-2). The Terps kept their momentum from the third quarter leading to the final play of the game.

Sophomore Elina Goldenberg scored with five seconds left in the regulation, putting the Terps on top 11-10. After Princeton took a timeout, Maryland's defense held, giving the team its second win of the ECAC Championship and a berth in the finals.

Beck scored three goals and Goldenberg had two.

"We are still having some let downs in the games but we're coming back strong," said Salyer. "We are taking a step in the right direction to close the weekend."

The Terps face off against Iona in the ECAC Championship finals at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
