
Terps Open Season at JMU Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's golf team will open its spring season Friday at the JMU Invitational at Eagle Landing Golf Club in Jacksonville, Fla.
In its third year, the tournament will pit a total of 18 teams against eacho other including: Campbell, Central Arkansas, Chattanooga, East Carolina, Elon, Florida Gulf Coast, Georgetown, Illinois, Illinois State, Jacksonville, James Madison, Kennesaw State, Longwood, Miami, North Carolina Greensboro, the defending champions South Florida and Stetson.
Ready for their first action of the spring, the Terps are led by sophomore Christine Shimel who led Maryland at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate with a tournament-best 212 (71, 72, 69). The Kennett Square, Pa., native, Shimel earned All-ACC Team and All-ACC Academic Team honors in 2010.
Also competing for Maryland are upperclassers senior Kerri Connolly and juniors Jessica Hollandsworth, Alexis Holmes and Lauren Varnas. Sophomores Hayley Brown and Lauren Smith round out the 2010-11 Terrapin squad which picked up three top-5 finishes in the fall.
Following Maryland's weekend particpation in Jacksonville, the Terps will head just north to Stockbridge, Ga. on Mar. 21 for the John Kirk Lady Panther Intercollegiate, hosted by Georgia State.
