JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore Christine Shimel used a 74 to lead Maryland to a fourth-place tie at the spring season-opening JMU Invitational at the Eagle Landing Golf Club in Jakcsonville, Fla.
A Kennett Square, Pa., native, Shimel fired off a two-over first round card to finish Friday tied for 10th individually. Junior Jessica Hollandsworth is also in the field's top-20 entering Saturday's round two play thanks to her four-over 76, strong enough for a tie at 19th place.
Senior Hilary Lawson is tied for 30th at 78 and sophomore Hayley Brown is one stroke back at 78, tied for 38th. Senior Kerri Connolly rounds out the Terrapin's roster tied for 68th place with a nine-over 81.
Overall, the Terps shot a 305, placing tied for fourth with Florida Gulf Coast. Chattanooga holds a sizable seven-stroke lead at 296 while Stetson and East Carolina trail the Mocs by six and seven shots, respectively.
Leading the race individually is Florida Gulf Coast's Briana Carlson, who used a two-under 70 to start the 18-team invitational in first. Stetson's Mallory Viera and UNC Greensboro's Courtney Taylor are tied for second at 71.
Play will resume Saturday morning with Maryland's tee times beginning between 8:40 and 9:20 a.m.
