ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Meghan Powers and Nicole Tobin both had career days in leading the Maryland water polo team to a convincing 18-7 win over Gannon in the opening game of the Wolverine Invitational Saturday morning.

But the Terps (8-7) were unable to get the same offensive output in the evening session and lost to seventh-ranked Michigan, 11-4.

Powers matched her career high with four goals and Tobin posted a career-best tying three for the 19th-ranked Terps who had their largest goal total of the season and their largest margin of victory against Gannon.

Maryland jumped out to a 5-2 first-quarter lead over the Golden Knights (0-9) and poured it on in the second half by scoring 11 goals.

Maddie Murphy also had a career-high three goals and Simone Lewis added two for the Terps. Colleen Harriger had a team-high four for Gannon.

Lauren Orth and Alison Mantel keyed a balanced Wolverine offensive attack in the nightcap with three goals apiece.

Michigan (14-4) did its damage in the first and third quarters, our-scoring the Terps 7-0.

Maryland had chances to close the gap but was unable to convert.

`We were 2 of 12 on the power play and had a few defensive lapses," Maryland head coach Carl Salyer said.

Shelby Reyes had eight saves against the Wolverines, including a pair on 5-meter penalty shots.

Allison Campbell, who entered the weekend with a team-best 53 steals, added five against Michigan. Ally Beck led the way offensively with a pair of goals.

Maryland will look to improve the win column Sunday with its final two games of the tournament. The Terps play Iona at 9:15 a.m. and Siena at 1:15 p.m.
