RIVERSIDE, Calif. -
Sophomore Allison Campbell matched a career high with five goals and freshman Katie Ermakova scored the game winner late in the fourth quarter to lift the Maryland water polo team to an 8-7 win over the Cal Baptist Lancers Saturday afternoon in its opening game at the Lancer Invite #2.
The Terrapins (10-8) won their third straight in the evening session, knocking off Occidental College by a 5-2 margin.
Campbell had the eventual game winner against the nation's top-ranked Division III program during a three-goal third period. Freshman Maddie Murphy chipped in a pair of goals.
The Terps (10-8) had to rally from a 5-2 third-quarter deficit to CBU and ended up tying the game three times.
Campbell had two goals in a 90-second stretch at the end of the third to knot the game at 5-all.
But after senior Ally Beck gave the Terps a 6-5 lead with a goal at the 6:28 mark of the fourth, the host Lancers (15-9) answered with a pair of scores to take the lead.
Simone Lewis tied the game at 7-all with a goal at 2:51 and Ermakova followed with the decisive score 50 seconds later.
Shelby Reyes backboned the defensive effort against Cal Baptist with 11 saves, including five in the fourth quarter. The junior netminder also turned away two 5-meter penalty shots.
"It wasn't pretty, but it's a win," Maryland head coach Carl Salyer said after the Cal Baptist tilt. "We did a good job defensively to get back in the game."
Petra Kovacs led the Lancer attack with three goals, but missed a last-second attempt which would have sent the game to overtime.
"We with withstood that last-ditch effort," Salyer said. "Our defense held up."
The defense was also solid against Occidental. Reyes had seven blocks in the game and the Terps held the Tigers scoreless for more than a 14-minute stretch from the end of the second period to midway through the fourth.
The Terps did not take part in Friday's action in the two-day round-robin tournament, though they will stay in California into next week.
Maryland will travel down the coast Sunday to play at No. 11 San Diego State (10 a.m. PDT). They will also face Whittier at 1 p.m. at the Aztecs' home pool.
The road will not get any easier as No. 12 Cal Irvine is on the schedule for Wednesday (7 p.m. PDT) and third-ranked USC on Friday (5 p.m.).
