Maryland Splits Sunday in San Diego

SAN DIEGO - The Maryland water polo team fell behind early to San Diego State and was unable to recover, losing to the 11th-ranked Aztecs, 10-4, on Sunday.
But the Terps (12-9) bounced back in their second game of the day at SDSU, downing Whittier College, 17-4.
Allison Campbell (four goals) and Ally Beck (three) led the offensive attack against Whittier which saw nine Terps enter the scoring column.
Maryland, which jumped out to an 8-3 halftime lead, went 3-for-5 with an extra attacker, while Whittier scored all four of its goals on eight Terrapin ejections.
The Terps got off to a much slower start in the first game of the day.
The Aztecs (13-9) jumped out to a 4-0 first-quarter lead and tacked on another four goals in the third period.
Maryland had opportunities at the offensive end, but SDSU goalie Kelly Campoli turned aside 17 Maryland shots and allowed just two goals over her three quarters of work. Maryland was also 0-for-3 on the power play.
"We did some things offensively that we wanted to do," Maryland head coach Carl Salyer said after the Aztecs' game. "We just couldn't convert."
Katie Ermakova scored a team-high two goals for the Terps, while Sarah Brady, Ronni Gautschi and Meaghan Poland each scored twice for San Diego State.
With the University of Maryland on spring break, the Terps will remain out west, though the remainder of the trip will not be easy. They will face No. 12 Cal Irvine at 7 p.m. PDT Wednesday and third-ranked USC at 5 p.m. Friday.
