WASHINGTON -
Freshmen Molly Ruth scored a career-high four goals and sophomore Allison Campbell added three to lead the Maryland water polo team to a 10-7 victory over George Washington on Friday.
The win was the fifth straight for the 20th-ranked Terps (6-4, 1-0) and first of the season in the CWPA Southern Division.
"It was a hard-fought game, closer than the final score," Maryland head coach Carl Salyer said. "We traded goals most of the game but never backed down. GW had a good crowd, but we handled it well."
Junior Shelby Reyes backboned the defense with a career-high 16 saves for the Terps who led 5-3 after the first period and then snapped a 7-all tie with a goal in the final seconds of the third period.
Megan Walker, Monica Hanson and Allison Peotter had two goals apiece for the Colonials (2-5, 1-1).
Ruth had just three goals on the season entering game.
"Molly really stepped it up," Salyer said. "She was on fire tonight and we really relied on her."
Maryland is staying on the road the rest of the weekend. The Terps are traveling to Princeton, N.J., where they will face Marist (11 a.m.) and Hartwick (5:30 p.m.) on Saturday and Indiana (1 p.m.) on Sunday.
