PRINCETON, N.J. - The Maryland water polo team got some solid production from its youngsters, but it wasn't enough to overcome No. 17 Indiana's balanced offensive attack as the Hoosiers upended the Terps, 13-8, Sunday in a neutral site tilt.
Freshmen Nicole Tobin (3), Maddie Murphy (2) and Katie Ermakova (2) combined for seven goals for No. 20 Maryland (7-6), but eight IU players got in the scoring column led by Nicole Redder's game-high tying three markers.
"We struggled overall but our freshmen and sophomore stepped up," Maryland head coach Carl Salyer said.
In addition to the offensive production, sophomore Allison Campbell posted a career-best nine steals and sophomore Simone Lewis added three. Ermakova also forced three ejections, as did Lewis and Murphy.
But Hoosiers (6-7) closed each half strong, scoring four goals in both the second and four quarters.
Shelby Reyes turned aside seven Hoosier shots in Maryland's final of three weekend games at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool.
The Terps split Saturday's non-conference games downing Marist, 12-8, and falling to No. 14 Hartwick, 10-7.
The Terps are off until Saturday when they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the Wolverine Invitational. Maryland will play four games over two days beginning with 10:15 a.m. matchup on Saturday with Gannon.
