COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Allison Campbell and Katie Ermakova scored three goals apiece to lead a balanced offensive attack and help the Maryland water polo team down George Washington, 13-5, Friday evening in its CWPA Southern Division opener.
The Terrapins (14-13, 1-0) scored the first four goals of the game and then score four more, including one each by Campbell and Ermakova, in a 5:09 stretch of the second quarter to take a commanding 9-2 advantage.
"We had a good start defensively and we got some solid two-meter play early which forced them to change their defense," Maryland head coach Carl Salyer said.
The Colonials (6-14, 0-2) never got closer than six goals in the second half.
Nicole Tobin added a pair of goals for Maryland and Rachel Stein backboned a solid defensive effort with season-high tying 11 saves.
"We had a bit of a letdown in the third quarter, but we played well in the fourth" Salyer said.
Charlotte Schou had 12 saves for GWU, including five in the third quarter.
Freshman Maeve O'Connor scored her first-career goal in the final period, one of four Terps to hit the back of the net in the final 8:00.
"I thought we played Maryland water polo tonight and set a good tone for rest of weekend," Salyer said.
Maryland, which is receiving votes in the national poll, has three more games at home this weekend, though just one on Saturday which will serve as Senior Night.
Beck, Meghan Powers, Jessica Ernst and Stephanie Ragheb, as well as Elina Goldenberg, will be recognized prior to the meeting with 17th-ranked Princeton (7 p.m.).
The Terps will play host to four neutral site games Saturday at the Eppley Recreation Natatorium. Harvard and George Washington start the day with a 9 a.m. tilt.
Admission is free to all games over the weekend. Parking will be available in the Lot 2G lower which is adjacent to Eppley or Lot 6 Arena Garage. Click here to view a campus parking map.
The games featured this weekend will assist in determining the seeding for the CWPA Eastern Championship (note: there is no CWPA Southern Division tournament this season) which is scheduled for April 29-May 1 in Bloomington, Ind.
