COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Saturday was Senior Night for the Maryland water polo team, but it was the play of its junior goaltender that carried the Terrapins to a 12-10 victory win over Harvard Sunday morning.
Shelby Reyes posted a career-high 15 blocks, including 11 in the second half, and senior Meghan Powers scored a team-high three goals for Maryland (16-13, 3-0) which won for the fourth straight time and clinched the CWPA Southern Division regular-season title, the team's first since 2009.
The Terps also got solid contributions from a number of freshmen.
Molly Ruth scored a pair of goals, and Katie Ermakova and Nicole Tobin added first-half markers to keep Maryland within striking distance after Harvard (14-12, 2-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
Simone Lewis assisted on Power's second goal at 6:48 of the third which tied the game at 6-all. Lewis scored less than a minute later to give Maryland its first lead.
"We did a nice job defensively and got some good counter attacks," Maryland head coach Carl Salyer.
But it was the play of Reyes that keep the Crimson from mounting a second-half comeback after the Terps took the lead for good (9-8) on Powers' final goal with 2:57 left in the third quarter.
Reyes had five saves in the third quarter, including one from point-blank range by Shayna Price with under 30 second left in the period.
With the Terps leading 12-9, Reyes turned away a breakaway chance by Christy DiSilvestro with 2:14 left in the game.
Maryland closes the regular season at 3 p.m. Sunday when it takes on Brown (10-13, 1-2).
No. 17 Princeton (16-10, 3-1) downed the Bears, 6-5, in Sunday's opening tilt of the day to give the Tigers at least a share of the division crown.
However, Maryland owns the tiebreaker by virtue of its 7-5 victory over the Princeton Saturday night.
Admission is free to all games. Parking will be available in the Lot 2G lower which is adjacent to Eppley or Lot 6 Arena Garage. Click here to view a campus parking map.
The games featured this weekend will assist in determining the seeding for the CWPA Eastern Championship (note: there is no CWPA Southern Division tournament this season) which is scheduled for April 29-May 1 in Bloomington, Ind.
