BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Christine Goetsch's last-second goal in the second overtime lifted the Maryland water polo team to a thrilling 9-8 victory over Princeton Friday in the second round of the CWPA Eastern Championship.
Goetsch's goal, the only one in the two extra periods, sent the fourth-seeded Terrapins (18-13) to their sixth-straight win and third victory of the season over No. 5 seed and 20th-ranked Princeton (16-11).
Maryland head coach Carl Salyer called it "a great team win."
The Terps led 7-4 in the fourth quarter before Princeton came roaring back with four consecutive goals to take the lead.
But Goetsch came to the rescue for the first time, tying the game at 8-all late in the final frame.
"I'm really proud of the ladies," Salyer said. "They really battled. It was a tough, hard-fought game."
The 19th-ranked Terps will face No. 1 seed and sixth-ranked Michigan at 4 p.m. Saturday in the semifinals. The Wolverines rolled past the eighth-seeded Colonials, 18-4, in another second-round game Friday.
GWU reached the second round by knocking off ninth-seeded Mercyhurst Friday morning in a first round game of the three-day tournament which is being held at Indiana University.
