BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Ally Beck and Allison Campbell each scored a pair of goals, but the Maryland water polo team fell short against top-seeded and sixth-ranked Michigan, losing 11-6 in semifinal action Saturday at the CWPA Eastern Championship.
The fourth-seeded Terps (18-14), who had a thrilling overtime win over Princeton in Friday's second round, saw their six-game winning streak snapped against the Wolverines who had four multiple goal scorers led by Lauren Colton's three.
Meagan Cobb, Keller Felt and Kiki Golden chipped in two goals apiece for Michigan (32-4) which advances to play Indiana in Sunday's CWPA Eastern Championship game.
The 19th-ranked Terps will face No. 12 Hartwick in the third-place game at 1:30 p.m. The Hoosiers knocked off second-seeded Hartwick, 10-9, in Saturday's other semifinal game.
Maryland hung in early against the Wolverines as the game was tied at 3-all at the end of the first quarter. But Michigan took the lead for good, by scoring all three of the second quarter goals.
Both teams got strong play in net.
Michigan's Alex Adamson made eight saves, including five on the penalty kill, and Maryland's Shelby Reyes turned back 13 shots.
Despite the loss, Maryland has a chance to match its best-ever finish at the CWPA Eastern Championship. The Terps were third in 2009.
