COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Current Terrapins Ali McEvoy and Jill Witmer, as well as incoming freshman Maxine Fluharty, recently competed with the US Under-21 team in a five-game series in Germany.
The Americans finished the tour with a 2-1-2 record, winning the final two games. They won 5-1 and 3-2 to close out the series.
All three Terrapins scored in the 5-1 win. Germany took an early 1-0 lead, but Witmer tied it up in the 19th minute. Fluharty scored later and McEvoy sent in a stroke to finalize the score at 5-1. Witmer also added an assist.
"The competition in Europe was challenging. I think it gave us the opportunity to grow as a team and individuals in the game, and keep improving to prove that we belong at that level. I think we did that with beating the Germans 2 out of 3 times," McEvoy said.
In the 2-1 win, Fluharty scored the Americans' first goal and Witmer assisted on the second.
Over the course of the trip, the two Terrapin returners got a chance to get comfortable playing alongside Fluharty.
"It was really great for all three of us to get to play together," Witmer said. "It's definitely going to help us going into next year, given that we've already been in high-pressure situations together."
The Terrapins will be hosting a play day Saturday with James Madison heading to College Park. Sunday will be the first of two 7 v 7 fundraisers, with the second on April 16. An Alumni game will be played on April 16 at 6 p.m.
