COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The women's golf team repeated as winners and the men's tennis team won for the first time in four years, as both teams were honored Sunday at the President's Cup Brunch held at the Riggs Alumni Center.
The President's Cup Team GPA Awards are given for the highest overall cumulative grade point average in the prior two semesters.
The women's golf team earned a combined GPA of 3.29, earning the honor for the second consecutive year. It edged women's tennis (3.26) and gymnastics (3.15) for the award.
The men's tennis team posted a 3.12 cumulative GPA in the previous two semesters in winning for the first time since 2007. Cross country (3.05) and swimming & diving (3.02) were also at the top of the list. The eight awards won by men's tennis in the 15-year history of the event are the most of any men's sport.
Also awarded on Sunday were CHAMPS/Lifeskills Cup team honors to the women's soccer and wrestling teams. The awards are given to groups that were distinguished in academic and athletic excellence, commitment to career and personal development and commitment to community service.
A number of individual awards for community service, athletics achievement and academic success were also presented at the brunch.
