POSITION TITLE: Senior Associate Athletic Director/ SWA

UNIVERSITY: The University of Maryland is among the most comprehensive and successful athletic programs in the United States with 27 sports and an annual expense budget of approximately $55 million. The University is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities and is located on a beautiful campus located eight miles north of the nation's capital and near Columbia, Maryland, which was recently listed as the #2 “Best Place to Live” by Money Magazine. The Athletic Program has won 18 national championships over the last 15 years and is a charter member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Currently, 78 of the University's academic programs are ranked in their respective Top 25 nationally.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direct supervision of the Director of Athletics, the Senior Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator is responsible for assisting the University's intercollegiate athletics program with strategic communications and for establishing policies and procedures that achieve the parallel goals of development of quality, competitive athletics teams and support of the individual educational goals of student-athletes. The Senior Associate Director of Athletics/Senior Woman Administrator will supervise selected women's and/or men's sports and their respective coaching staffs, budgets, and various other related facets, student-athletes, event management, special events, and fund-raising activities as appropriate.
Specifically, this position will be responsible for the following: 1. Assisting the University's intercollegiate athletics program to achieve the parallel goals of development of quality, competitive athletics teams and support of the individual educational goals of student-athletes through management of the personnel, budgetary, facility, and equipment resources available to the athletics program, development of policies and procedures designed to assure achievement of internally and externally established goals and objectives, and continuous evaluation of individual and unit performances toward achievement of those goals and objectives; 2. Facilitating the attainment of personal development and academic goals by student-athletes through engendering a philosophy which promotes those goals and establishes an environment conducive to both, providing opportunities for academic assistance to student-athletes if required, and monitoring the academic progress of participating student-athletes; 3. Providing leadership in the focus of the recruitment effort of the University's intercollegiate athletics program and ensures compliance with NCAA rules and regulations governing the recruitment of student-athletes by providing guidance and/or policies to team coaching staffs that engenders compliance with recruiting rules; 4. Developing a schedule of intercollegiate athletics contests which supports the established goals for selected women's and/or men's sports within the athletics program and assuring that the program operates within the subsidy provided by the University by developing strategies for marketing the athletics program that generate significant revenues, coordinating specific game dates among the various athletics teams and with other universities and colleges, and ensuring that the schedule includes an appropriate balance of home and away games and that the required facilities (i.e., fields, courts, arenas) are available to support the schedule; 5. Managing funds by staying within an annual budget developed for selected women's and/or men's sports which includes equipment, travel, facility, training, or related resource needs and exercising final authority over selected sports' expenditures; 6. Promoting a positive image of the intercollegiate athletics program and the University by participating in community and professional organizations and representing the University, as a spokesperson for women's intercollegiate athletics, at professional meetings and on community committees; 7. Representing the University at all relevant campus, ACC, and NCAA meetings as the Senior Woman Administrator; 8. Contributing to the overall success of the intercollegiate athletics program by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Athletics. The scope of the position will frequently require weekend and evening work and occasionally overnight, out-of-town travel.
QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor's degree is required. A Master's degree , with an emphasis in Sports Administration, Physical Education, or Recreation preferred. At least ten years of experience in athletics administration is required, preferably at a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level athletics program. Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations governing recruitment, student-athlete eligibility, and related functions is required. Substantial budgetary experience is required. Experience in strategic communications and fund-raising is preferred.
