COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Scorching temperatures didn't slow down the University of Maryland Department of Intercollegiate Athletics as it celebrated the conclusion of a remarkable 2010-11 season at its annual BBQ/Kickball festivities last Friday.
Kevin Anderson, who is in his first year as Director of Athletics at Maryland, served as grill master and dished out hot dogs, hamburgers and chicken to a hungry Terrapin staff. Attendees were also treated to an ice cream station.
Nearly 60 coaches and staff members participated in the kickball tournament.
The red team, captained by volleyball coach Tim Horsmon, cruised through its semifinal game, handling the gold squad. In the other semifinal action, the white team staged a late rally against the black squad to push the game into extra innings. However, a costly error by the white team sparked the black into the finals.
The black squad, led by Associate A.D. for Academic Support Chris Uchacz, ultimately silenced its critics and captured the championship.
It was also a day to honor several milestones on the staff, as Deputy A.D. Randy Eaton recognized individuals who earned university awards for time served in the department, as well as weddings, engagements and births.
