COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Maryland head coach Brian Pensky today released the women's soccer schedule for the 2011 season. The Terps are coming off 2010 season that saw them earn the program's first-ever No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament and a berth in the ACC championship game. This season, Maryland will play nine teams that qualified for last year's tournament, including home games vs. national runner-up Stanford and another No. 1 seed, North Carolina.
"We have put together a challenging schedule - one that certainly excites our kids, and hopefully excites our fans as well," said Pensky, who is beginning his seventh year as the Terps' head coach. "The ACC is the ACC - we always know the types of challenges within our league; but we are equally excited by the non-conference opponents we'll face this fall. We have a very good team, and we look forward to being tested from day one."
After home preseason exhibitions against West Virginia (Aug. 10) and Georgetown (Aug. 13), two other NCAA tournament teams from 2010, Maryland opens its regular season with Minnesota, which reached the Sweet 16 last season, on Aug. 19 at Ludwig Field.
The Terps then play at local rival Loyola on Aug. 22, before returning home to face the Stanford Cardinal on Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field. Maryland faces Navy on Aug. 28 and finishes its three-game home stand on Sept. 2 vs. St. Louis.
Maryland concludes its non-conference schedule with games at Cornell on Sept. 4, at home vs. American on Sept. 7 and at James Madison on Sept. 11.
The Terps' ACC schedule starts out on the road at Virginia on Sept. 15. Maryland returns home for a three-game stretch during which the Terps face Virginia Tech on Sept. 18, Boston College on Sept. 22 and NC State on Sept. 25.
A road game at Clemson on Sept. 29 is followed up by eight days off before hosting Wake Forest on Oct. 8.
From there, the Terps will play three straight conference road games beginning with the Florida trip that has Maryland facing Florida State on Oct. 13 and Miami on Oct. 16. The road trip finishes with a trip to Durham, N.C., to play Duke on Oct. 23..
Maryland returns to Ludwig Field to close out its 2011 ACC schedule, hosting North Carolina on Oct. 27.
The ACC Tournament will be held Oct. 30-Nov. 6. The 2011 NCAA Tournament will begin on Nov. 13, with the first four rounds being held at campus sites. The 2011 Women's College Cup is being hosted by Kennesaw State at the KSU Soccer Stadium in Kennesaw, Ga. The semifinals will be played on Dec. 2, with the finals scheduled for Dec. 4.
