COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Five members of the 2010 NCAA and ACC champion Maryland field hockey team were named to USA Field Hockey's Junior National teams announced Monday.
Maxine Fluharty, Katie Gerzabek, Natalie Hunter, Ali McEvoy and Jill Witmer were all named to the Under-19 and Under-21 teams. Fluharty and Gerzabek were named to both, while Hunter, McEvoy and Witmer made the Under-21 team. Witmer was also named to the U.S. Developmental Squad earlier this summer.
"We couldn't be more pleased with level of commitment to High Performance hockey by all of the Maryland athletes this summer," Maryland head coach Missy Meharg said. "Aside from being selected to represent your country, training within the U.S. system gives our players an opportunity to play at the appropriate level in preparation for our season. It's an exciting time for this age group as they prepare to compete in India for the Junior World Cup in 2013."
To make the squads, athletes participated in the Junior National Camp, held last week at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. 102 of the nation's top players trained in their respective age groups.
The members from each squad will be invited to a training weekend at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. in early 2012 and from there the touring teams will be selected.
Potential tours for 2012 include the top Junior National Team athletes to play with the Women's National Team Developmental Squad vs. an international side who would visit Chula Vista in the first quarter of 2012. The U-19 team will head to Canada to compete in a four game test series. Dates for these events are to be determined.
