COLLEGE PARK, MD. -
The No. 6 University of Maryland women's soccer team kicked off its preseason in style with a 1-0 win over No. 13 West Virginia Wednesday evening at Ludwig Field.
Once the opening whistle blew, it didn't take long for the Terps to score the game's lone goal. In the third minute of play senior All-American Jasmyne Spencer collected a long outlet pass from the Maryland defensive zone, split two Mountaineer defenders and poked the ball forward. From there the speed of redshirt junior Becky Kaplan made the difference as she beat the WVU goalkeeper to the ball and deftly finished the uncontested score.
The Terps had control of play for most of the first half and had several opportunities, but were unable to convert.
In the second half the Mountaineers came out strong, looking for the tying goal, but Maryland was able to withstand the pressure and hold on for the victory.
The Terps finish their preseason schedule on Saturday, Aug. 13, when they host No. 23 Georgetown at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field.
