COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 6 University of Maryland women's soccer team concluded its 2011 preseason schedule with a 3-0 shutout victory over No. 23 Georgetown Saturday night at Ludwig Field.
The Terps got things rolling early, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the second minute of play when junior Olivia Wagner finished a feed from redshirt junior Becky Kaplan into the lower left corner of the goal.
Maryland picked up its second goal on a penalty kick by senior Sade Ayinde in the 25th minute. The penalty kick was awarded to the Terps when senior All-American Jasmyne Spencer was taken down on a breakaway by the Hoya goalkeeper.
The scoring was wrapped up in the 82nd minute when two sophomore transfers connected. Kristen Schmidbauer slipped a nice ball to Alex Reed on the left side of the 18-yard box and Reed ripped a blast into the upper left corner to make it a 3-0 game.
The Maryland defense was stout all night and was backed up by a trio of keepers, who each turned in clean sheets for the night. Senior Yewande Balogun, sophomore Shannon Zickler and freshman Rachelle Beanlands combined for three saves in the match.
The Terps will open their 2011 regular season on Friday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. vs. No. 22 Minnesota at Ludwig Field.
