KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -
The Maryland volleyball team lost to Villanova, 3-1, in its first match of the season Friday night as part of the Comcast Lady Vol Classic. The Terrapins will have an opportunity to pick up two wins tomorrow when the team meets Ohio in the morning and concludes with a match against the host Tennessee Volunteers.
Senior Maddi Lee led Maryland offensively with 10 kills, while Ashleigh Crutcher and Adreene Elliott had nine and eight, respectively, in making their Maryland debuts. Junior setter Remi McBain dished out 31 assists for the Terrapins, while Elliott had six blocks.
Sophomores Sarah Harper and Caroline Niski totaled 15 and 11 digs, respectively.
Villanova used an 8-0 run to take a 14-6 lead midway through the first game. Lee stopped the run with a kill, but the Terps would not get any closer as Villanova took the first set, 25-15.
The second set was a tight affair. Maryland scored five straight points to take a 9-4 lead. However, the Wildcats would come back to tie the score at 21-21, and eventually win the set, 25-23.
Following the break, Maryland took a 4-1 lead in the third set with two kills from junior Caitlin Adams, and a kill apiece from Crutcher and Lee. A solid defensive effort from the Terps forced several Villanova errors as Maryland stretched its lead to 17-9. The Terrapins would go on to win the third set, 25-18.
With Villanova leading the fourth set 13-12, the Wildcats took control of the game by scoring four straight points. Villanova wrnt on to win the set, 25-20.
