Day 1 Results 
HANAHAN, S.C. -
Junior Christine Shimel led the Maryland women's golf team in their 2011 fall opener at the Cougar Classic held at Yeamans Hall Golf Club. Shimel is tied for 25th after carding a 1-over 73 in the first round. The Terrapins are 12th out of 22 teams with a score of 299.
The Cougar Classic runs through Tuesday. On Monday, the Terps will tee off at 8:45 a.m. In addition to Shimel, Maryland's participants in the event include three-time All-ACC selection senior Jessica Hollandsworth, senior Lauren Varnas, junior Hayley Brown and freshman Juliet Vongphoumy.
Hollandsworth, a three-time NCAA regional participant, is joined by returnees Brown, senior Alexis Holmes, Shimel and Varnas for the 2011-12 season. Head coach Jason Rodenhaver added sophomore transfer Emily Gimpel and freshmen Jessica Uem and Vongphoumy to round out the roster.
Other schools participating in the Cougar Classic include: Alabama, Charleston Southern, College of Charleston, Duke, Florida, Furman, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Minnesota, North Carolina, N.C. State, Mississippi, Penn State, Richmond, South Carolina, Tennessee, UNC Greensboro, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest and Wisconsin.
