Freshman Juliet Vongphoumy carded a 2-over 74 in the first round of the Cardinal Cup at Cardinal Club to finish tied for fifth and pace the Terps Monday. Maryland is tied for fifth after the first round with a 307. The second round was cancelled because of inclement weather. The final round will be played Tuesday.
Junior Christine Shimel finished just outside the top-10 after shooting a 4-over 76 to complete the round tied for 14th. Senior Jessica Hollandsworth completed the trio of top-25 Terps with a 5-over 77 to finish tied for 23rd.
Sophomore Emily Gimpel finished tied for 51st with an 80 and junior Hayley Brown totaled an 81 to finish tied for 58th.
The tournament concludes Tuesday with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start.
N.C. State's Amanda Baker and East Carolina's Fanny Wolte lead the individual competition with a 72. N.C. State leads the team competition with a 296.
Other teams competing in the Cardinal Cup include: Akron, Cincinnati, East Carolina, East Tennessee State, Furman, Louisville, Memphis, Middle Tennessee State, Missouri, Morehead State, N.C. State, Penn State and Xavier.
