COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland water polo team turned in a pair of strong performances Saturday during opening-day action of the Terrapin Invitational.
After downing Marist, 15-7, in the first game of the two-day, five-team tournament, the 20th-ranked Terps (2-0) posted an impressive 14-6 victory over No. 14 UC San Diego (2-1), their first-ever over one of the major California programs.
Maryland received contributions throughout its roster with 10 players scoring against the Red Foxes and eight lighting the lamp vs. the Tritons.
Senior Shelby Reyes helped key the win over UC San Diego with 13 saves, including 11 during a close first half.
"Our goalkeeping was stellar in both games," Maryland head coach Carl Salyer said. "Once Shelby got going and got into a groove she was very sharp."
After a close opening eight minutes, the Terps took a 5-4 lead, one they did not relinquish, on Rebecca Gerrity's goal with 7:25 left in the second quarter.
Maryland went on to score four of the next five goals and never looked back.
"The defensive effort was the key," Salyer said. "We held them to one goal in the second half. We made some adjustments at halftime. It was all about team defense and that transitioned to team offense. We really did a good job of reading the situations."
Simone Lewis and Katie Ermakova, as well as newcomers Danielle Robinson and Rebecca Gerrity, scored two goals apiece.
Maryland took advantage of exclusions in both games. The Terps scored six goals against UC San Diego with the extra attacker and seven vs. Marist.
Nicole Tobin and Allison Campbell led the offensive attack against Marist, posting three goals each.
Maryland registered the first five goals of the game with Campbell tallying a pair in the first quarter.
Marist (0-2) cut the deficit to 8-4 late in the second quarter before the Terps scored twice in the final minute before halftime.
Tobin scored with 45 seconds left and senior captain Christine Goetsch added an exclusion goal with 4 seconds on the clock.
The Red Foxes never got closer than five goals in the second half.
Rachel Stein led a solid defensive effort for Maryland with seven saves. Redshirt freshman Taylor Reeves saw her first career action in net, playing the fourth quarter and registering one save.
Ermakova had two goals against the Red Foxes.
The Terrapin Invitational closes out Sunday with three more games.
Maryland will play eighth-ranked San Diego State, which won both its games (15-1 over Marist and 13-7 over Wagner) Saturday, at 10:30 a.m. at Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium.
The Terps will play Wagner at 3 p.m., the last of eight games over two days.
