Final Stats

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After 45 minutes of scoreless play, the offense of No. 6 Maryland prevailed for three second half goals and 3-0 victory over local opponent American Monday night.

After a defensive battle of a first half, the teams were scoreless. The Terps (13-4) outshot the Eagles (8-9), 10-3, in the first stanza.

"American played a very good press against us and they were able to come up with the ball," head coach Missy Meharg said. "Defensively, they double-teamed very quickly. At halftime, we talked about finishing and getting in front of their cover player. We talked about how to get around her and get shots, and I think we did a very good job of that."

Just over 10 minutes into the second half, juniors Ali McEvoy and Jill Witmer teamed up to open the scoring. McEvoy swung it to Witmer along the post for a deflection off a penalty corner and a 1-0 lead.

Off another penalty corner just over three minutes later, Witmer passed it behind her back to senior Janessa Pope on the other side of the cage for the Terps' second goal in the 48th minute.

Nine minutes later, sophomore Steffi Schneid scored off a penalty corner to make it 3-0. She took a high shot and American's goalkeeper, Ashley Dalisera, got a hand on it but it deflected in for the goal.

With seven minutes remaining in the first half, American appeared to have deflected in a shot off a penalty corner, but the umpires called it back, as it hit off of an Eagle's leg.

Maryland outshot American, 20-5, in the match and had 11 penalty corners to three.

Junior goalkeeper Natalie Hunter recorded three saves in the Terps' eighth shutout of the season. American's Dalisera had eight.

Next, the Terrapins will welcome Rutgers (8-9) to College Park Friday night for a 7 p.m. game. Maryland will honor its eight seniors in Kirstie Dennig, Megan Frazer, Colleen Gulick, Danielle Kauffman, Janessa Pope, Lindsey Puckett, Harriet Tibble and Tara Zollinger prior to the game.

Rutgers head coach Meredith Long played at Maryland under Meharg and was a member of the 2005 NCAA Championship squad.
