LA JOLLA, Calif. - Maryland knocked off one top-15 team on the opening day of the Triton Invitational, but it was unable to gain a victory over a top-10 squad.

Allison Campbell and Katie Ermakova each scored four goals to lift No. 17 Maryland to a 10-9 upset victory over No. 14 Long Beach State Saturday morning at the two-day, 16-team event.

However, in the nightcap, sixth-ranked UC Irvine used a balanced attack to post a 12-6 win over the Terrapins (4-2).

Maryland never trailed against Long Beach State (0-2), but had to hold off a late rally.

"We got up on them early, but we had a battle after that," Maryland head coach Carl Salyer said.

Long Beach State knotted the game at 7-all with 3:10 left in the third quarter on Melissa Matheson's fourth and final tally of the day, but Maryland answered by scoring three of the next four goals.

Campbell scored her team-best 12th goal of the season with 18 seconds left in the third and Ermakova added her 11th with 5:13 remaining in the game to give the Terps a 9-7 lead.

Nicole Tobin had the eventual game-winner, scoring with 1:39 left in the game.

"We had to play defense and use our mobility and we did that," Salyer said.

Maryland did not get quite the same defensive performance against the Anteaters, who won their seventh-straight contest.

The Terps led 2-0 three minutes into the game before UC Irvine came roaring back with eight unanswered goals.

Maryland didn't score again until Carly Hoshko's goal with 2:33 left in the third quarter cut the deficit to 8-3.

Kelsey Klatt had a game-high three goals for UC Irvine.

Hoshko and Christine Goetsch had two goals apiece for the Terps.

The Terrapins' win over Long Beach State was their second over a top-15 team this season and first-ever on the opening day of the Triton Invitational.

Maryland downed then-No. 14 UC San Diego at the Terrapin Invitational.

The Terps will play No. 19 Cal State Northridge at 9:50 PST a.m. Sunday. They will have also one other game later in the day to close out the tournament.
