LA JOLLA, Calif. -
Maryland was poised for one of its biggest wins in program history, but in the end came up just a little short.
Ninth-ranked Indiana rallied for an 11-10 victory over No. 17 Maryland Sunday afternoon in the fifth-place game of the Triton Invitational.
Shae Fournier had a game-high four goals, including the game-winner with 2:16 left, to lift the Hoosiers (8-3) to their third victory in four games at the two-day, 16-team event.
Neither team led by more than one goal until Carly Hoshko's strike at 4:02 of the third quarter gave the Terps a 7-5 lead.
Maryland extended the lead to 9-6 one minute into the fourth quarter on Zoe Respondek's goal, but the Hoosiers scored four of the next five goals, including Shelby Taylor's tally at the 3:46 mark which knotted the game at 10-all.
"We played really until we got up by three goals and let them back in it," Maryland head coach Carl Salyer said. "We let them get the momentum and couldn't close it out."
Simone Lewis had career highs in goals (five) and points (nine) for the Terrapins who were seeking their first win over a top 10 squad, but they still managed their best-ever showing in this tournament which featured 10 ranked teams.
Repondek had three assists to go along with her one goal. Shelby Reyes had 11 saves for Maryland which helped claim sixth place in the tournament with a solid showing in Sunday morning's triumph over No. 19 Cal State Northridge.
Katie Ermakova scored three goals, Allison Campbell and Danielle Robinson added two apiece, and the Terrapins posted a comfortable 11-4 victory over the Matadors (3-7).
The Terps scored three goals in each of the first three quarters and never looked back in rebounding from Saturday evening's 12-6 loss to No. 6 UC Irvine.
Campbell had both of her goals in the first quarter when Maryland built a 3-0 lead just over four minutes into the game.
"We capitalized on our opportunities," Salyer said. "The defense fed the offense. It was a great team effort."
The Terps scored six straight goals from midway through the second period until early in the third with Robinson starting the run.
The freshman scored a goal at the 4:34 mark of the second and by the time Simone Lewis hit the back of the net with 6:05 left in the third, the Terps had built an 8-1 lead.
A goal by Alex Hoetker with 4:53 left in the game cut the deficit to 9-4, but that was all the scoring for Cal State Northridge which like Maryland went 1-1 during Saturday's games.
The Terps edged No. 14 Long Beach State, 10-9, Saturday morning, in the opening game of the tournament.
"It was a great tournament," Salyer said of his team's two wins over ranked teams. "The team battled all weekend and we had our best-ever finish at this event."
