COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland volleyball head coach Tim Horsmon announced Monday that Ryan McGuyre has been hired as an assistant coach.
McGuyre spent the past 10 years at California Baptist where he coached the men's and women's teams, winning a total of eight NAIA national championships between the two programs. Following last season, he earned 2011 AVCA/NAIA Women's Volleyball National Coach of the Year honors.
McGuyre was voted the 2010 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA)/NAIA Men's National Coach of the Year and has won a total of four NAIA Volleyball Tournament Coach of the Year awards.
During his tenure at California Baptist, McGuyre coached one NAIA Women's National Player of the Year, six different NAIA Men's National Tournament MVPs and two straight AVCA/NAIA Men's National Players of the Year.
"Being a head coach for some time, he's run his own programs - not only one but two programs - he's a very hard worker and committed," Horsmon said. "He's very passionate about volleyball. I was drawn to his volleyball IQ. He is a great teacher. He is really interested in the student-athletes and making them better volleyball players and better people. He has a great feel for the game from a technical and systematical standpoint."
On the women's side, he has coached 18 NAIA All-Americans, 15 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes and 14 players who were named to the NAIA All-Tournament team.
On the men's side, he had 19 players named to the NAIA Men's Invitational All-Tournament team and five named AVCA/NAIA All-America in the first two seasons it was awarded.
In 12 seasons as a women's coach, McGuyre has amassed 309 victories, 249 of which came in his time at California Baptist. In 2004 and 2005, McGuyre won back-to-back national titles with the Lancers.
"His demeanor and experience stood out to me," said Horsmon. "Right off the bat, I got a feel that he really understood the game. He's won national championships and that is hard to do at any level. I love that he has some experience in the men's game because I think so much of our game is starting to move in that direction of how athletic the women are becoming."
Prior to his stint at California Baptist, McGuyre coached three seasons (1999-2001) at Biola University in La Mirada, Calif, where he totaled 60 wins and reached the NAIA regional playoffs each year. While coaching the women's side, he coached three NAIA All-Americans, five All-Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) honorees, six NAIA All-American Scholar-Athletes and seven GSAC Scholar-Athletes.
After graduating from Biola in 1998 with a bachelor's degree in social science with an emphasis in secondary education and a minor in biblical studies, he joined NC State's coaching staff for the 1998 season as a graduate assistant.
"We are really excited to have Ryan join our staff," said Horsmon. "He comes from a great volleyball background and we are really excited about bringing him into the Maryland volleyball family."
McGuyre and his wife Jennifer have three children, Tryston, Kitana and Ryder.
