COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland field hockey team won its second straight Big Apple Indoor Tournament championship this weekend.
For the second year in a row both Maryland indoor teams rose to the top of their pools and played against each other in the championship game.
The Terps played Ohio State and Albany University in their respective semi-final matches to get to the title.
Jill Witmer was named most outstanding player for the College Division, leading the Terp Red team to a 6-3 win over the Terp Black team .
"Maryland hockey has a rich tradition of being fundamentally sound in the indoor game of hockey," head coach Missy Meharg said. "As the outdoor game creatively evolves with more 3D skills, the indoor game demands discipline in receiving, in eliminations and 1v1 defense. We find the pace of the ball, the tone in communication and awareness of playing angles invaluable for our year round player development. We thank Nigel Traverso and Tina Reinprecht for a well run tournament in a fantastic facility."
