Second Round Results
ORANGE PARK, Fla. -
Two freshmen led the charge for the Maryland women's golf team Saturday as the Terps moved into second place, one stroke behind USF, with a 585 (295-290) at the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational at Eagle Landing Golf Club.
Emily Gimpel carded a career-low 70 to move into a tie for fifth and Juliet Vongphoumy fired a 1-under 71 for the second consecutive day to move within one stroke of the leader heading into the final round Sunday.
Gimpel, who shot a 2-over 74 in the first round, recorded the second lowest round of the day for a two-day total of 144. Gimpel trails the leader, Campbell's Kaylin Yost by three strokes.
Vongphoumy continued her consistent play. The Providence, R.I., native leads the tournament in par-4 scoring (3.80) and is second in birdies (9). Vongphoumy is one stroke behind Yost with a 142 (71-71).
Junior Christine Shimel shaved one shot off her first round total to finish the second round with a 1-over 73. Shimel is tied for 12th with a 147 (74-73).
Senior Jessica Hollandsworth is tied for 37th with a 9-over 153 (77-76) and junior Hayley Brown is tied for 46th with a 10-over 154 (76-78).
The Terps will look for their third title Sunday. Brown will be the first Terrapin to tee off at 9:36 a.m. with Vongphoumy being the final Terp to go off at 10:08 a.m.
