
Terps to Play Pinehurst

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's golf team travels to Pinehurst, N.C., Monday, March 19 to compete in the Pinehurst Challenge at Pinehurst #6 hosted by the College of Charleston. Pinehurst #6 is a par-72, 5,993-yard course. Play will begin Monday at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start.
The Terps
Maryland opened the spring season last weekend at JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational. The Terps earned their second consecutive second place finish dating back to the fall and their fourth consecutive top-3 finish.
Freshman Juliet Vongphoumy opened the season with an even-par 216 to tie for second. It was Vongphoumy's fourth top-5 finish this year. Vongphoumy is the second leading scorer in the ACC with a 73.47 18-hole average.
Junior Christine Shimel tied for 10th at the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational and is tied for 10th in the conference in scoring with a 74.65 average. Shimel has two top-10 finishes this year.
Despite tying for 47th last weekend, senior Jessica Hollandsworth still ranks in the top-15 in league scoring. Hollandsworth is averaging 74.97 per 18 holes which is good for 13th in the ACC.
Freshman Emily Gimpel enjoyed a breakout performance in Florida. Gimpel fired a career-low 219 to tie for eighth which is the highest finish of her career.
Pinehurst Challenge
The 72-hole tournament will be played over two days starting Monday at 9 a.m. Both days will feature a shotgun start with Tuesday's third round beginning at 8:45 a.m.
The tournament will feature 17 teams including Maryland. Other teams competing include: College of Charleston, East Carolina, Elon, Georgetown, James Madison, Marshall, Middle Tennessee State, North Carolina State, UNCG, UNC-Wilmington, Old Dominion, Penn State, Richmond, Samford, Tennessee Tech and Western Michigan.
Live scoring will be available through Golfstat.com once play begins.
