PINEHURST, N.C. - Following a opening-round 296, the Maryland women's golf team carded a 2-over 290 to move into second place tie at the Pinehurst Challenge at Pinehurst #6 on Monday. Junior Christine Shimel sits in seventh after the first day and freshman Juliet Vongphoumy is tied for 13th.
After the first round, Shimel was tied for 19th after firing a 2-over 74. The Kennett Square, Pa., native jumped 12 spots on the leaderboard with a 2-under 70, which tied for the fifth-best score of the round and is her lowest round of the spring.
Senior Jessica Hollandsworth made the biggest move on the team in the second round. Hollandsworth opened the day with 4-over 76, but responded with an ever-par 72 in the second round to move from a 37th-place tie into a tie for 23rd.
Vongphoumy, who has back-to-back second place finishes, is tied for 13th after shooting a 3-over 147 (73-74). Junior Hayley Brown is tied for 32nd with a 150 (73-77), and freshman Emily Gimpel is tied for 37th with a 151 (77-74).
NC State is in first after the opening day with a five-under 571 (286-285). The Wolfpack's Vivian Tsui leads all competitors with a 4-under 140 (72-68).
The final round begins at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday.
