ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - The Maryland water polo team got back on the winning track Thursday on its annual spring break California trip.
Allison Campbell and Danielle Robinson matched a game high with four goals each to lead the 13th-ranked Terrapins to a dominating 17-8 win over Sonoma State.
Rebecca Gerrity and Nicole Tobin also aided the offensive attack with three goals apiece for the Terps, who scored the first four goals of the game and were never threatened.
"We had a slow start, but we played some good defense in the first half," head coach Carl Salyer said. "The offense kicked in during the second quarter."
After Sonoma's Laura Kune scored to make it 4-1 with 6:42 to go in the second quarter, Robinson took over, scoring the next four goals. Her strike with 7:46 left in the third made it 8-1.
The Terps, who had their season-best six-game winning streak snapped in their last contest, a tough 8-6 loss to then No. 15 UC Davis on Saturday, built the lead to 12-4 on Campbell's fourth goal with 16 seconds left in the third.
But Sonoma never got within seven goals the rest of the way.
Shelby Reyes started in net for Maryland and played three quarters, posting 11 blocks. Rachel Stein had two blocks playing in the fourth.
Senior captain Christine Goetsch didn't hit the scoring column, but had a solid defense game.
"Christine was just rock solid in the defensive end," Salyer said. "She really shut down their two-meter player,"
Maryland continues their five-game road trip Saturday when it takes on the Pacific Tigers at noon PDT and then closes the journey out the next day with a 10:30 a.m. game against Santa Clara.
