Save UMD Water Polo
STOCKTON, Calif. -
Allison Campbell and Katie Ermakova helped the Maryland water polo team put the finishing touches on a successful five-game spring break trip to California.
Campbell scored a career-high tying five goals and chipped in four steals, and Ermakova registered four goals for the Terps (14-4) who cruised to an 18-6 victory Sunday morning over Santa Clara at Pacific's Chris Kjeldsen Aquatics Complex.
Christine Goetsch and Nicole Tobin also scored twice apiece for Maryland which won four times over the last nine days on the West Coast.
Defense generated much of the offense with all but one of the 16 Terps who hit the pool registering at least one steal.
"Rebecca Gerrity and Christine Goetsch just played absolutely great 2-meter defense which really helped our counterattack," Maryland head coach Carl Salyer said.
Molly Ruth, who was one of nine Maryland players to score, had three steals.
The Terps broke the game open with six straight goals, including three from Campbell, over an eight-minute stretch in the first half.
Campbell's final goal in that flurry, an even-strength strike at the 2:58 mark of the third quarter, increased the lead to 10-2.
Santa Clara (4-18) scored next but Ermakova tallied goals twice in less than one minute on the man advantage and the Broncos never got within eight goals the rest of the way.
The Terps were a perfect 7-for-7 in 6-on-5 situations.
All three Maryland goaltenders saw action with Shelby Reyes posting five blocks and two steals over the first two-plus quarters of the game.
"It was a great way to end the spring break trip," Salyer said.
Maryland, which has won nine of its last 10, begins a three-game homestand Saturday when Princeton visits Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium. The Terps and Tigers will play at 10 a.m.
