After First Day, Terps Three Strokes Back

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. - The Maryland women's golf team trails East Tennessee State by three strokes after the Terps turned in a complete team effort on the opening day of the John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate at Eagle Landing Country Club Monday. The Terps finished the first day with a 12-over 588 (295-293) and head into the final round in second place.
Three Terps sit in the top 10 after the first two rounds of play. Senior Jessica Hollandsworth is tied for sixth after carding a 1-over 145 (73-72). Hollandsworth's second-round 72 ties for her lowest round of the spring.
Freshman Juliet Vongphoumy, who has two consecutive top-10 finishes, opened the day with an even-par 72 and fired a 3-over 75 in the second round. The Providence, R.I., native will head into the final round tied for ninth.
Sophomore Emily Gimpel shaved three strokes off of her opening round 75 to card an even-par 72 in the second round. Gimpel joins Vongphoumy in a tie for ninth.
Sitting in 20th after the first two rounds, junior Christine Shimel fired a 149 (75-74) Monday. Junior Hayley Brown is tied for 25th with a 152 (76-76).
Maryland tees off Tuesday morning starting at 9:30 a.m. East Tennessee State is in first with a 585 (296-289). The Buccaneers' Sian Evans leads the field with a 5-under 139 (72-67).
