Terps Strong in Classroom in Fall 2011

March 6, 2012

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland student-athletes had some strong performances in the classroom in the Fall of 2011, according to figures announced Tuesday by athletics director Kevin Anderson.

The news was highlighted by the 306 student-athletes who earned a 3.00 grade-point average or above, with 251 of those earning a 3.20 semester GPA. There were 122 student-athletes named to various Dean's Lists by their respective colleges.

The news was particularly good in football. The cumulative GPA of 2.554 for the football team is the highest cumulative team GPA posted in the last eight years. The semester GPA for Fall 2011 was 2.544, the second-highest in eight seasons.

The news is also in the context of the all-time high Graduation Success Rate of 82 percent, released in the fall by the NCAA. It was the second time in the seven-year history of the metric that Maryland has been above 80 percent.

"Academics are at the core of what we are all here for," said Anderson. "Every coach and staff member is committed to helping our student-athletes succeed in the classroom. Congratulations to our coaches and student-athletes, and certainly to Chris Uchacz and his staff at the Academic Services and Career Development Unit for their outstanding work."

"Once again our Terrapin student-athletes have excelled not only in the athletic arena but in the classroom as well," said Uchacz. "Both the "all-team" average semester and cumulative GPA's are slowly creeping to our goal of 3.00, and almost 50 percent of our student-athletes earned a fall semester GPA of 3.00 or higher. This is a true testament to the type of student-athletes that our coaches are recruiting and bring to the University of Maryland."
