
Terps in Florida for Spring Opener

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's golf team begins its 2012 schedule on Friday, March 8 at the fourth annual JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational at the par-72, 6,282-yard Eagle Landing Golf Course in Orange Park, Fla. In 2011, the Terps placed eighth in their first appearance at the tournament.
The Terps
Maryland enters the weekend No. 57 in GolfWeek's team rankings which is seven spots higher than its team ranking at the end of the 2011 season (No. 64) and has three golfers ranked in the top 15 in the ACC in scoring.
Freshman Juliet Vongphoumy, who earned three top-10 finishes in the fall, is fifth in the ACC in scoring with a 73.79 strokes per round average and is second in the conference in scoring among freshmen behind NC State's Augusta James (73.53).
Senior Jessica Hollandsworth is 10th in the conference with a 74.43 average. Hollandsworth, Maryland's single-season scoring leader, had three top-20 finishes in the fall including a third-place finish at the UNCG/Starmount Classic.
Junior Christine Shimel rounds out the Terps' top 15 contingent. Shimel is averaging 74.93 stokes per 18 holes which ranks 14th in the ACC. Shimel finished in the top-10 twice this season including a sixth-place finish at the UNCG/Starmount Classic.
In the fall, the Terps dropped their 18-hole and 54-hole scoring averages to the lowest levels in more than a decade. Maryland's 18-hole average is 298.7 and its 54-hole average is 890.8, five and 18 strokes lower, respectively, than the end of last season.
JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational
James Madison has hosted its tournament at Eagle Landing Golf Club in Jacksonville, Fla., since 2009, all three years of the tournament's existence. The course will be an open links-style Clyde Johnston design that weaves through the Florida landscape as well as the exquisitely-maintained Oakleaf Planation community.
The 2012 field includes: Campbell, Chattanooga, East Carolina, East Tennessee State, Elon, Illinois, Illinois State, Jacksonville, Maryland, Morehead State, North Carolina, Old Dominion, Radford, Samford, South Florida, Stetson, UNC Greensboro and Western Carolina
Live scoring will be available via Golfstat once the tournament begins.
