COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Attacker Katie Ermakova was named the CWPA Western Division Player of the Week and goaltender Shelby Reyes the top defender on Tuesday by the league office.
Ermakova had key plays in one of Maryland's biggest wins in program history, a 10-9 triumph over Michigan Saturday to claim the CWPA Western Division title.
She helped thwart a breakaway attempt with just under 1:00 to go with the score tied at 9-all and then set up the game-winner. The sophomore stole the ball in the middle of the pool with 34 seconds left, sent an outlet pass which led to Christine Goetsch's game-winning goal. Ermakova also posted a career-best seven points (four goals/three assists) in Friday's 21-1 win over Salem International.
Reyes was huge for Maryland in the win over the Wolverines, making key defensive plays down the stretch. Reyes, who had eight saves, stopped a potential breakaway on a steal in front of the net with 3:30 left in the game. She also had two blocks off point-blank attempts in the fourth with the game tied at 9-all.
It marked Reyes' third defensive player of the week award this season.
The Terps (17-4) are the top seed in the CWPA Western Division Championship which begins Saturday at Indiana University. They will play with the winner of the Hartwick-Gannon game at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
