Terps Make a Move on Day Two at ACCs

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Junior Christine Shimel, who started the day tied for 30th, carded a 3-over 74 to catapult into a tie for 15th and lead the Maryland women's golf team into sixth place Saturday at the ACC Championships at Sedgefield Country Club. After two rounds, Maryland is seven strokes outside the top 3 with a 609 (307-302).

Shimel shares 15th place with freshman Juliet Vongphoumy. The Providence, R.I., native fired a 6-over 77 for a two-day total of 151 (74-77).

Sophomore Emily Gimpel and senior Jessica Hollandsworth both reside inside the top 30 after two rounds of play. Gimpel is tied for 22nd after shooting an 8-over 79 Saturday for a total of 153 (74-79). Hollandsworth is one stroke behind Gimpel after responding with a 1-over 72 following an opening-round 82. The Floyd, Va., native is 26th.

Senior Lauren Varnas is in 45th place with a 186 (88-98).

North Carolina picked up a stroke on clubhouse leader Duke, but the Blue Devils still lead the Tar Heels by nine strokes heading into tomorrow's final round. The Blue Devils' Lindy Duncan is in first with a 3-under 139 (70-69).

The Terps will tee off in group two Sunday starting at 8:50 a.m.
