BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Maryland water polo team will not be able to follow up its CWPA Western Division regular-season crown with a tournament title.
Despite a game-high three goals from Simone Lewis, the top-seeded and 10th-ranked Terps (17-5) were eliminated in the second round of the Western Division Championship Saturday afternoon with a 8-7 loss at the hands of No. 19 Hartwick.
Lisa Bass and Lilly Martinez had two goals apiece for the fifth-seeded Hawks who used a four-goal outburst in the third quarter to take control.
"Hartwick played well and real hard," Maryland head coach Carl Salyer said. "We just got outplayed. We took a lot of ejections and weren't able to stop their power play."
Hartwick (25-10) tied the game at 5-all on its first possession of the second half and took a lead it wouldn't relinquish a few minutes later.
Leading scorer Allison Campbell (49) had a third-period goal for Maryland and Lewis's final score in the fourth cut the margin to 8-7, but the Terps, who had their six-game winning streak snapped, couldn't get another one by goaltender Haley Cox who had 10 saves.
Maryland's defense generally leads to a number of offensive opportunities, but not on Saturday.
"We just couldn't seem to get it going," Salyer said. "We only scored one counterattack goal."
The Terps will play No. 2 seed and 12th-ranked Indiana (25-8) at 10:30 a.m. Sunday in the third-place game.
Hartwick, which knocked off fifth-seeded Gannon, 19-4, Saturday morning, will face No. 3 seed Michigan in Sunday's championship game. The Wolverines downed Indiana, 10-7, Saturday evening. The Hoosiers are playing host to the two-day tournament.
All seven teams from the CWPA Western Division will join the six Southern Division squads in the CWPA Eastern Championship later this month (April 27-29 in Providence, R.I.). The first-place team receives an automatic big to the eight-team NCAA field.
