Profit Leads; Echard Earns All-ACC Honors

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Jessie Echard finished third in the women's hammer throw Thursday to earn All-ACC status and lead University of Maryland performances at the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Virginia.
Echard, a senior from Fairfax, Va., posted a mark of 183 feet, 7 inches to place third in the hammer. Teammate Moriah Young placed sixth at 175-10. Each had their best mark on their second attempt and held onto their place through the rest of the competition.
Echard and Young were seeded fifth and eighth in the hammer coming into the league championships. They scored nine points for the Terps in the event, which put them in fifth place after the first day of competition.
Virginia was in first with 19 points after Thursday's two finals, with Duke in second with 16 and NC State third at 15 points.
Also for Maryland on Thursday, senior Kiani Profit took the lead in the first event and held the lead through the remaining three events to top the standings in the heptathlon. Profit has 3,378 points after the first day to hold the lead over North Carolina junior Ariel Roberts (3,158) and Clemson's Whitney Fountain (3,042).
Profit had the best marks in the competition in the 100-meter hurdles (14.13), the shot put (39-8) and the 200-meter dash (24.50) to earn the lead. Her high-jump mark of 5-5.75 was second in the field behind Roberts, who went 5-7. Her shot put mark is her best in a heptathlon competition as a Terp.
Profit, a three-time All-American in the multi-events for the Terrapins, will compete in the long jump, javelin and 800 on Friday.
On the men's side, Pat Cole scored a point for the Terps in his first event at the ACC Outdoor by finishing eighth in the hammer throw. Cole had a season-best mark of 163-8, surpassing his previous best throw of 161-10. He came into the meet seeded 13th in the hammer.
Cole's point put the Terrapins on the board and in eighth place after three events on the men's side on the first day of the competition. Virginia Tech led with 28 points, with Virginia and Florida State tied for second with 24.
Nick Regan and Tyler Stump finished 19th and 20th late in the evening in the 10,000-meter run. Regan went 31:44.66 and Stump ran 32:20.58 in their first 10K runs of the season.
