COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Following a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Regional Championships this past weekend at the University of Arkansas, the Maryland gymnastics team climbed to No. 28 in the latest GymInfo Rankings released Monday. It is the Terps' highest ranking to end the season since 2004 when Maryland finished the season also at No. 28.
Since 1996, Maryland has only finished higher than 28th once, which came in 2001 when the squad finished the season ranked 14th. The final poll will be released following the NCAA Championships. But teams outside the top 12 will not be affected.
The Terps totaled a 194.400 Saturday night to finish fifth in a field consisting of four top-20 teams. Senior Kyra Phillips and sophomore Katy Dodds tallied the highest scores for Maryland. Phillips finished tied for seventh on vault with a 9.850, and Dodds followed with a 9.850 on floor to tie for 11th.
All-time, it was Maryland's third-best postseason performance in the program's 18 NCAA appearances.
