JOB DESCRIPTION
Under the direct supervision of the Deputy Athletic Director, the Senior Associate Athletic Director will serve as a senior level member of the Athletic Department and the lead for the Media Relations unit of Maryland Athletics. He/she will act as the Managing Editor for all ICA communications and media strategies.
The Senior Associate Athletic Director will be responsible for managing a $500,000 annual budget and six full-time employees and a number of graduate and undergraduate student employees. Leadership responsibilities will also include developing and managing a strategic communications plan for the entire department, crisis communications (as necessary) and national media coverage of selected events, teams and student-athletes.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervise staff to develop and produce effective and timely media exposure for all Maryland sports
- Organize staff and assign duties so as to maximize productivity, efficiency and responsiveness to the needs of the media, student-athletes and staff
- Write & edit press releases, features, blogs, etc.
- Ensure Maryland athletic achievements are presented in the most favorable way to a wide-ranging audience on a consistent and timely basis
- Supervise the management of Umterps.com to ensure timely and relevant information is provided to the public and media
- Develop and pursue synergistic ways to assist all of the external units of the athletic department
- Comply with all NCAA, ACC, University and departmental policies and procedures
- Other duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:
- Extensive experience in athletics communication, promotion and media relations is required, preferably at a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or professional sports level.
- Demonstrated successful experience, preferably at the NCAA or professional sports level.
- Experience in the Baltimore / Washington D.C. region is preferred.
Other:
- The scope of the position frequently requires weekend and evening work and periodically requires overnight, out-of-town travel.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
- A Bachelor's degree is required. A Master's degree is preferred.
Experience:
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in the areas of athletic communications, promotions, or media relations is required, preferably at NCAA or professional sports level. Significant budgetary and full-time staff oversight experience is required.
Skills:
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills are required. Managerial and organizational skills are a must along with successful communications, promotions, media relations experience and strong computer skills.
