COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's athletics teams finished 10th in the Capital One Cup, which honors the country's top Division I sports programs.
The Terps were led by field hockey's fifth national championship in seven years. Maryland, which concluded the 2011-12 campaign with 62 total points, also saw stellar success from women's basketball (NCAA Elite Eight), women's lacrosse (NCAA Semifinals) and women's soccer (NCAA Sweet Sixteen).
The Capital One Cup for Division I men's athletics will be announced in the coming weeks. Maryland is currently 14th in the men's standings. The Terrapin women moved up two spots this season after finishing 12th with 46 points in 2011.
Five ACC schools ranked among the top 25 in the final women's standings including Duke (fifth), Florida State (14th), Virginia (16th), and North Carolina (25th).
The Capital One Cup is awarded annually to each of the best men's and women's Division I college athletics programs in the country. Points toward the Capital One Cup are earned and tracked throughout the year based on final standings of NCAA Championships and final official coaches' polls.
