GREENSBORO, N.C. - Rising senior Christine Shimel and rising junior Emily Gimpel were named to the 2012 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Women's Golf team, the conference announced Monday. It is the third consecutive season Shimel has been honored.
Shimel, a marketing major, finished second on the team in scoring this year. In 11 events, the Kennett Square, Pa., native averaged a 74.88 per round and tallied four top-10 finishes. At the Lady Pirate Invitational in October, Shimel carded a season-low 217 including a career-low 68 in the second round to help the Terps capture the tournament title for the second consecutive year.
Gimpel, a kinesiology major, enjoyed a strong spring season. In six spring events, Gimpel scored a 75.50 and finished in the top-10 twice. At the season-opening JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational, Gimpel fired a career-best 219 and tied for eighth as the Terps finished second.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic team, a student-athlete, regardless of classification, must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
