COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland volleyball team announced its 2012 schedule on Monday. The Terps will face six teams that participated in last year's NCAA tournament, including a home-and-home with Final Four participant Florida State.
The Terps open the season in Philadelphia, Pa., at the Villanova Classic on Aug. 24-25. The two-day event will pit Maryland against New Hampshire, Robert Morris and the host Wildcats. It is the fourth consecutive season the Terps and Wildcats have squared off. It will also mark the first-ever meeting between Maryland and Robert Morris, where head coach Tim Horsmon began his collegiate coaching career.
Maryland will play host to back-to-back tournaments to open its home slate. The Terps welcome Binghamton, Ohio State, which advanced to the Sweet Sixteen last season, and Seton Hall to Comcast Pavilion for the Maryland Invitational the weekend of Aug. 31, and close the homestand against Boston College, George Washington and Tennessee on Sept. 7-8 as part of the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Invitational.
Before beginning conference play, the Terps travel to LIU-Brooklyn to compete in a four-team tournament. Maryland will take on NJIT, St. Johns and the host Blackbirds (Sept. 14-15).
"The ACC is becoming one of the best conferences in the country and I think our non-conference schedule is going to prepare us for league play," said Horsmon. "It's going to give us a chance to get some of the younger players on the court early and see how they perform.
"All of the teams that we are playing are competitive and from an RPI standpoint produce a really solid schedule particularly since we play a couple of top 25 programs in Ohio State and Tennessee."
The ACC schedule begins with a road trip to Clemson (Sept. 21) and Georgia Tech (Sept. 23). Maryland returns home the following weekend to face Virginia Tech (Sept. 28) and Virginia (Sept. 30).
The month of October begins with two matches on consecutive nights. The Terps are at Duke and Wake Forest on Oct. 5 and 6, respectively, and return home on Oct. 12 to welcome Miami and challenge reigning ACC champion Florida State on Oct. 14.
Following a trip to North Carolina (Oct. 19) and NC State (Oct. 20), the Terps have a mid-week clash at local rival American on Oct. 23.
The Terps complete their home-and-home with Georgia Tech and Clemson on Oct. 26 and Oct. 28, respectively, and wrap up their home schedule with a visit from Wake Forest on Nov. 2 and Duke on Nov. 4.
The Terps final five matches are on the road starting with Virginia on Nov. 9 and Virginia Tech on Nov. 10. Maryland travels to the Sunshine State to face Florida State (Nov. 16) and Miami (Nov. 18) the following weekend, and concludes its regular season at Boston College on Nov. 24.
The NCAA tournament is scheduled to begin Nov. 30 with first and second rounds at campus sites. The regionals are Dec. 7-8. The national semifinals and finals will be held in Louisville, Ky., Dec. 13-15.
