COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Three Terrapin field hockey players and the U.S. Junior Women's National Team won the bronze medal in the Pan American Junior Championship in Guadalajara, Mexico by defeating Chile, 2-1, Saturday night. Maxine Fluharty, Katie Gerzabek and Ali McEvoy competed for Team USA.

With the bronze medal, the Americans clinched a bid to the 2013 Junior World Cup. Fluharty and Gerzabek were in Guadalajara for the entire tournament, with McEvoy joining Team USA last Sunday.

"Qualifying for the Junior World Cup was imperative," Maryland head coach Missy Meharg said. "We are proud of Maxine, Katie and Ali their roles in securing the needed outcome over Chile. The World Cup next summer gives our elite junior players the proper FIH tournament experience to rebuild and progress in the world hockey stage."

In the tournament, Fluharty scored twice, Gerzabek had one goal and McEvoy notched a goal and a defensive save.

"I am absolutely delighted with the result," said USA head coach Nick Conway. "This group of players has committed a lot to prepare to be here, missing the most challenging time of year from their collegiate programs. They've worn the jersey with pride, and I am thrilled to pieces with the success that these players have earned this tournament and for all the families and friends who traveled to Guadalajara and followed from home. We've achieved what we came for and for that we will go home delighted."

Next, the Terps will take on No. 7 Virginia (8-2, 1-0) Friday at 6 p.m. in Charlottesville, Va. GameTracker live stats will be available.
