Terps Sweep Past Colonials, 3-0

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland volleyball team got 29 kills combined from sophomores Ashleigh Crutcher and Adreené Elliott to defeat George Washington 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 27-25) Saturday afternoon in the Terps' second game of the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Invitational at Comcast Pavilion.
Crutcher led all hitters with 15 kills and Elliott added 14 for the Terps. Senior Remy McBain had double-double with 25 assists and 13 digs.
As a team, Maryland tallied a season-high .306 hitting percentage on 51 kills. The squad added nine blocks and six service aces.
Crutcher was dominant in the opening set. The Raleigh, N.C., native finished with six kills and one solo block. Crutcher tallied four kills during the Terps' 8-2 run to open the match. After George Washington cut the lead to two points at 10-8, Maryland scored five of the next six points behind two kills apiece from senior Caitlin Adams and freshman Kamrin Gold, while McBain added a service ace.
After junior Mary Cushman pushed Maryland's lead to six points at 17-11, the Colonials mounted a comeback and cut the Terps' lead to three points at 18-15. But consecutive kills and a service ace from freshman Emily Fraik put Maryland comfortably in front.
The second set was tight throughout with both teams scoring back-and-forth. With Maryland leading 11-10, Elliott sparked a 6-2 run with a kill setup by freshman Mackenzie Dagostino. Crutcher ended the run with three consecutive kills to give Maryland a 17-12 lead.
The Colonials cut the lead to three points, but an Elliott kill and a Dagostino service ace extended Maryland's lead. The Terps closed the set on a 6-2 run to secure the win.
The final set featured 12 ties and five lead changes with the Colonials leading for most of the set. A kill from George Washington's Jamie Armstrong put the Colonials up 23-19 and seemingly in control. But the Terps scored the next four points including two kills from Cushman and a kill from Crutcher to tie the set.
Following a George Washington timeout, Crutcher continued the Maryland spurt with her fourth kill of the set. A Maryland error tied the set, but Elliott answered with another kill to give the Terps set point.
George Washington would extend the match on the next point, but Elliott and McBain followed with kills to clinch the win.
