COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland freshman gymnast Kathy Tang earned East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Co-Gymnast of the Week honors, while senior gymnast Ally Krikorian was awarded EAGL Specialist of the Week honors for their performances on Saturday in a quad meet at Pittsburgh, the league announced Tuesday.
It is Tang's second award of the season. Last week, Tang earned EAGL Rookie of the Week honors. It is also the second consecutive week two Terps have been recognized by the league. Katy Dodds joined Tang and was named EAGL Specialist of the Week.
Continuing a strong start to her collegiate career, Tang scored personal bests on bars, beam and floor, and won her first-ever gold in the all-around with a career-high 39.375, which is one-tenth shy of the fourth-best all-around score in school history. Tang's 9.875 on vault helped the 14th-ranked Terps total a program-best 49.300 on vault.
Krikorian tied for first on both vault and floor with a score of 9.900 in both events, establishing new seasons highs for the Costa Mesa, Calif., native.
It is the first time Krikorian has earned specialist of the week honors. The senior was a three-time rookie of the week honoree in 2010.
Tang is the first Terrapin to be voted gymnast of the week since March 20, 2012, when Katy Dodds was selected. Tang shares the award this week with North Carolina's Elizabeth Durkac.
Maryland opens its home schedule on Saturday against EAGL-foe North Carolina.
